It was initially designed and produced by Boeing Vertol in the early 1960s , now Boeing Integrated Defense Systems .

With a top speed of 315 km/h, it is faster than contemporary 1960s utility and attack helicopters . It is one of the few aircraft of that era, such as the C-130 Hercules and UH-1 Iroquois , which Still in production and in service in the first line with more than 1,179 units manufactured to date. Its main uses include transport of troops, deployment of artillery and refueling in the battlefield . It has a large loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and three hooks for lifting external cargo.

The Chinook has been exported to sixteen countries. Although some nations use larger helicopters, such as the Russian Mil Mi-26 , the Chinook continues to be the heaviest cargo helicopter used by its main operators: the US Army and the Royal Air Force.
