Intercontinental ballistic missiles are ballistic missiles with impressive range. Their mission is primarily military.
Intercontinental missiles are the most important carrier for nuclear weapons. According to the SALT II treaties, ICBMs are all ballistic missiles whose range exceeds 5,500 km. The abbreviation ICBM is usually understood to be land-based systems. Sea-based intercontinental missiles are called Submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).
After the rocket-driven launch, the projectile reaches the near- outer space, which is largely driven by a ballistic orbit to the target; the typical range is 5,500 to 15,000 km. In contrast, short and medium range missiles fly in the lower reaches of the earth’s atmosphere and achieve a shorter range.
